Technology has evolved. The only application one was conversant with in the past was when he/she was filling for a job post! In the present time, everything is pretty simple thanks to technology. If you want a cab, an application is on standby to request one! If you want to get food from your favorite restaurant, you can order it through an app! If you want to keep fit, an application is already there to guide you on the necessary tutorials!

Factors I consider
This is the first and most important factor for me. I want an app that is compatible with my phone. Some bookmakers offer the app to Android users only while others offer to both Android and iOS users. An app that is compatible with all mobile operating systems will be rated highly due to the number of people accessing it.
- Sports selection
This is another crucial section I look for in an app. Most platforms offer slightly fewer sports than what is originally posted on the desktop version. So an app that boasts of the same number of sports as seen on the desktop version gets my approval.
This goes with how the app is tailored to meet my interests. How friendly is the app? How is the navigation process? Is the lobby less crowded? And how about the design? I always want an application that will take me a few minutes to understand and get my desired option. Additionally, security is another major aspect of an app especially with my crucial information provided. As a consequence, I look for an app that is offered effective security features.
- Bet options & markets
Some of the apps offer slightly fewer bet options and markets to players as compared to what is offered on the desktop. I want an app that provides a variety of betting options and markets. Bet options such as moneylines, totals, parlays, props, teasers, and more should find their way in the app. Additionally, other options such as live betting/in-play betting also play a major role in my app selection.
- Payment methods
This is another crucial section. Some of the platforms offer limited payment methods to app users which is not impressive. I always look up for apps offering the same methods and can further provide the same method for depositing and withdrawing funds. Currencies incorporated is another aspect. With some of the platforms boasting global status, I consider an app that incorporates a variety of popular currencies.
The following apps met most, if not all, of my considerations. I further realized that all the apps allowed the following services;
- Creation of a new account
- Depositing and withdrawing funds
- Contacting customer service
Below is a review and my experience on some of the best sports betting apps;
BetMGM was launched this year as a rebrand of the original PlayMGM. With its rebrand came an app that was launched to New Jersey residents. I downloaded the app on my Samsung phone through the link provided on the platform. I would later note that those players who used the iOS-powered phones would download the app directly from the Apple Store. The system requirements in place required me to have an Android version 8.0 or higher for better access.
On the first login, I was welcomed to a platform that boasted of sizeable fonts, clear graphics, and top-quality pictures. Its landing page was intuitively designed with the control lobby fitted at the bottom. At the top of the page, top options and sports were highlighted including; Live, Football, Basketball, NHL, Soccer, and more. At the bottom, the A-Z option provided the 3 different sections offered by BetMGM (Sports, Casino, and Poker) and the 13 different sports offered.
The sports included;
- Aussie Rules Motor Sports
- Basketball Soccer
- Baseball Golf
- Boxing Hockey
- Cricket Rugby Union
- Football Tennis
Among the top events and leagues I came across included; MLB, NHL, NFL, NBA, ATP, UEFA Champions League, and more. The following betting types/options were offered; Moneyline, Totals, Prop, Parlay, Spread, and Futures. The markets were impressive especially on the top events with some soccer games boasting over 188 bet possibilities.
The following features stood out for me on the app;
- Live betting – I would place a bet on a live game and take advantage of the enhanced odds
- Live streaming – With a funded account, I would watch some of the top sports live on the app
- Cash-out – This allowed me to take control of my bet by withdrawing winnings or part of my stake before an event was finished
- Edit Bet – Through the feature, I would add, swap, or remove a selection and also have an avenue to increase my stake.
- Daily odds boost – I would have some markets boosted daily and by taking advantage of them, I would record huge returns.
FanDuel is among the leading DFS (Daily Fantasy Sports) provider. The operator has seen its access increasing in many states where players can play for real money. However, the fantasy section, as I would later note, has attracted many players from all over the world. FanDuel had tailored a Fantasy app and a sportsbook app.
The sportsbook app installation was pretty easy with the download link provided on the platform. iOS users could also download the app from the Apple Store. On the first login, I was impressed with how the operator had designed the app. At the top of the page, popular options and events were provided which included; Live, NFL, CFB, NBA, CBB, and UCL. Slightly below were two sections Popular and Live where I would view the popular picks & bets and view the live games respectively. At the bottom, the sections T&Cs, FAQs, and Responsible Gambling were provided. The main control lobby was at the bottom with the options; All Sports, Betslip, Casino, and Account.
The All Sports option provided all the 15 different sports from the pop-up page presented and the ‘Other Links’ section with crucial sections such as terms and conditions. I came across the following sports;
- Australian Rules College Football Hockey
- Baseball Cricket MMA
- Basketball Darts Motor Racing
- Boxing Football Soccer
- College Basketball Golf Tennis
FanDuel had offered the following betting options on the platform; Moneyline, Spread betting, Prop Betting, Totals, among others. The markets, however, were average which slightly limited my betting opportunities.
Among the features that impressed me included;
- Live betting
- Live streaming
William Hill is among the most popular bookmakers globally. Many players from different regions have since accessed the operator’s products and services. I came across various applications including Sports, Casino, Live Casino, Poker, Bingo, Vegas, and Games. However, my interest was in the sports app which I downloaded.
I must admit William Hill’s application exceeded my expectations. With its high-rating, came high-quality products such as the app. I was ushered in an application with huge content that did not complicate the lobby as everything was arranged systematically.
- Basketball Snooker
- Cricket Tennis
- Football Golf
- Darts Ice Hockey
A variety of betting options and markets were also offered hence giving me a variety of betting opportunities.
The following features stood out in the app
- #YourOdds – The feature allowed me to create my unique bet on different markets. William Hill would then price the bet for me after tweeting them using the hashtag #YourOdds
- Odds Format – The app allowed me to choose my preferred odds format (Fractional, American, and Decimal)
- Radio service – I would listen to live commentaries on the racing events
- Live betting
- Live streaming
- Odds boost
theScore is popularly known as a digital sports media company. They are known to offer sports news, opinions, scores, and predictions for sports lovers. However, there were plans on launching a sportsbook and this year has seen theScore launch a sportsbook licensed in New Jersey. Being a new entrant in the market, theScore had to get it right. This saw them launch a mobile application that I successfully downloaded and installed.
I was impressed with how the app was sleek and simple to understand. The fonts, colors, and graphics were top-notch. The interaction was also made easier thanks to the well-designed lobby. At the top of the page, top leagues and events were provided including; NFL, NCAAF, MLB, NBA, and NHL. At the bottom of the page, the main control bar had been provided with the following options; Home, My Bets, Live, Sports. The sports offered slightly above 14 selections with some of the popular ones including North America’s major pro and college games. Other sports offered included;
- Australian Rules Darts Rugby Union
- Baseball Football Soccer
- Basketball Golf Tennis
- Boxing Hockey
- Cricket MMA
- Cycling Motor Sports
With theScore still in the early stages, there were limited markets and bet options but there was a promise of more additions being made periodically.
Few standout features were offered at the time of writing this piece. However, going by their launch notes, the following are some of the features I accessed and some that are projected to hit the app any time soon;
- Live betting
- Cross-app integration – This will allow a player to access both betting and media apps
- Live scoring updates
- Getting game overviews
Bet365, like William Hill, is another top operator globally with its products and services accessible to millions of players. The operator boasts of other sections such as Casino, Games, Live Casino, Poker, Bingo, and Vegas. However, the sports section got my thumbs up.
After successful installation, I logged into an application that was simple in design with no unnecessary ‘fat’. The trademark green and black colors were present coupled up with sizeable fonts. Navigation was also easy thanks to the ‘Search’ option laid out at the bottom of the landing page. On the top-left, the ‘A-Z’ section was offered where I came across more than 36 different sports. This was a section the operator had extensively dealt with. I liked this. The main control bar was located below the page and the following sections were offered; Sports, In-Play, Search, and Gaming.
Among the sports offered included Winter Sports where I would bet on Alpine Skiing and Ski Jumping. Specials were also offered and I would take a bet on UK politics, Australian, Swedish, among other countries. The racing events were also incorporated in the app which was impressive. Other sports included;
- Soccer Handball Cricket
- Tennis Volleyball Ice Hockey
- Basketball Golf Snooker
Bet365 impressed me also on the betting types and markets it had offered on the app. On the soccer section, for example, I had the following markets to choose from; Full-Time Result, Double Chance, Correct Score, Goals Over/Under, Both Teams to Score, Goal Scorers, and Draw no Bet.
Bet365 allowed me to access the following features;
- Bet Builder – The feature allowed me to create a unique soccer bet on several markets of up to 6 selections. The selections would then combine to make a single bet, therefore, increasing my returns in case it won.
- Live betting
- Live streaming
- Audio support
- Edit bet
- Different odds format
- Different languages
Final Thoughts: Which One to Choose?
Everything is simply eased. The growth of smartphones has seen many people turn to techies through accessing the internet and exploring many avenues. In this present age, the betting industry has also evolved with people developing an interest in the world of sports. With this development, many online bookmakers have since been on the rise. And with the market saturated, the bookmakers have looked for ways to gain a competitive edge over the other. The ways have since focused more on the customer needs with one of them being accessibility. For this reason, many if not all, bookmakers have offered a mobile platform that has improved the convenience of the players.
The mobile platform has comprised of two mediums. A site version and an app version. The app version is the most sought after medium where it directly connects a player to the platform in a tap. With statistics showing that an average person spends almost 5 hours on the phone, this proves to be a good catch for the bookmakers. The apps have been tailored to meet the customer demands by providing more or less the same products and services as seen on the desktop version.
In a world of thousands, I decided to explore some of the best sports betting apps available. Getting the best app is not an easy process as it may seem. I look at several factors before opting for one, as we saw throughout my article. In any case, the final choice is yours.
