Betting on NHL: Where to find the top odds?

The NHL (National Hockey League) is regarded to be the premier professional ice hockey league in the world. It is comprised of thirty-one teams in total. Seven of them are Canadian and the rest (twenty-four) from the United States. An interesting fact is that every year the oldest professional sports trophy in North America – The Stanley Cup is awarded to the league playoff champion at the end of each season.

Where to bet on NHL

Since online sports betting became legal in the United States, it has become quite popular with interest growing by the day. If you are an Ice Hockey fan and you like to try out your betting luck, you can do it legally from any of these sportsbooks and locations.

Fanduel Sportsbook NHL betting oddsNHL Betting at FanDuel

FanDuel is a well-known American sportsbook that was acquired by the Irish giant “PaddyPower” in May 2018. In November the same year, FanDuel became the first official daily fantasy/sports betting partner of the National Hockey League.

When it comes to the odds, they provide FanDuel is the place for Ice Hockey betting, especially NHL betting. They offer to bet on regular matches (Moneyline, Point Spread, Totals) and on Future markets. The array of Future markets or, as some may call them, “Outright” markets is both broad and diverse. If I wanted to, I could choose to bet from the winner of the Stanley Cup to the winner of any of the Conference or Division titles. The odds for those markets are substantial, as well. For example, the odds for the Stanley Cup Winner market range from +700 to +25000. So, if you have a gut feeling, go ahead and bet on this before the odds change.

In-Play betting is also available at FanDuel when it comes to the NHL. The odds for the live events change every minute, depending on the evolution of the match, so don’t miss any chance to bet on a game while you are sure you will win. If you are a first time dopositer, enter a fanduel promo code to get a bonus offer.

When it comes to the available promotions at FanDuel, we could hit the jackpot as they say. Their welcome bonus is a risk-free bet with Cashback of up to $500. You are not going to see a bonus like that anywhere else. If you don’t feel welcome enough, they offer other bonuses such as:

  • Multi-Sport Parlay Insurance
  • Keep the Cash
  • Other Sports-related bonuses

Unfortunately, currently, FanDuel doesn’t offer any promotions related to the National Hockey League. But that may change in the future, so be sure to check their website sportsbook every day.

Being the first official sportsbook partner of the NHL has its perks, and we see that in the odds and bets they offer.

NHL odds bet365Bet365 NHL Betting

We are just beginning to see what Bet365 has to offer across its sportsbook to the US customer base. They only just started to operate here in the US, and so far, we are liking what we see. The variety of sports that Bet365 offers is gigantic. They provide betting on everything from Football to Table Tennis. But what we are really interested in here is, “What are their NHL betting opportunities?” I really like the variety of Hockey bets you can find at Bet365. We can combine them in the following categories:

  • Lines
  • Main
  • Score
  • 1st Period
  • 1st 10 Minute
  • Game Props

There is also a Daily Props Section, which changes every 24 hours that includes Homes vs. Aways, Daily Props, and more. The Futures betting section is also quite large.  You can see markets such as:

  • Top Goalscorer
  • To Win Outright
  • Top Point Scorer (Goals & Assists)
  • To Win Conference/Division

The odds they provide for Ice Hockey aren’t as good as other sports like Football or Baseball, but they are still solid. In time we may even see a significant change in the prices because they are still somewhat a new provider in America and are adjusting. I would never expect not to like anything they have to offer compared to other bookmakers. If using the betting site for the first time, you can enter a Bet365 promo code to obtain a bonus on top of your first deposit for their sportsbook. They might be operating on new land, but they are still the world’s #1 bookmaker.

An exciting feature they provide is in-play, live-streaming, and mobile streaming. Some of these features we see almost everywhere, but the one thing that caught my eye was the mobile streaming. You can watch every Ice Hockey match you wish on your mobile device for free. That is absolutely amazing. Most online bookmakers these days offer live-streaming, but to offer it on a mobile device, is quite rather rare and practical. I mean, I can sit in my favorite coffee shop and watch the game on my phone or hike in the mountains and still catch the details of the game. It is just incredible.

draftkings nhl picksDraftKings NHL Betting

DraftKings is well the “King” of American bookmakers. At least for now. They started out as a DFS (Daily Fantasy Sports) provider, and later, when it became legal, they opened an online sportsbook in New Jersey. Now you can enjoy online sports betting on DraftKings not only in New Jersey, West Virginia and Indiana , but soon in Michigan, illinois, Pennsylvania, Kansas and Colorado. Although they are officially partnered with the NFL, they still provide outstanding odds and market variety in other sports.

DraftKings’s NHL betting is as full as other more popular sports. They offer us betting on:

  • Game Lines
  • Sixty Minute Props
  • Team Futures
  • Player Props
  • Periods
  • Team Totals
  • Game Props
  • Correct Score

Each of these betting market categories has sub-categories (sub-markets) of their own. For instance, in the Game Props markets, there are eight sub-markets:

  • Double Chance (60 Min.)
  • To Score First and Win
  • Both Teams to Score
  • First Goal (60 Min.)
  • To Go Behind and Win – 60 Min.
  • To Win with a Shutout
  • Goal Scored, Listed Time
  • Odd/Even (60 Min.)

Let’s talk bonuses. The standard DraftKings promo code welcome package is a deposit bonus of up to $500. Except for a welcome bonus, we can take advantage of plenty of other regular sportsbook promotions. Among my favorite are:

  • Sportsbook Missions
  • Refer A Friend Offer
  • Parlay Insurance
  • Special Daily Odds Boosts

Unfortunately, there aren’t any specific NHL promotions available at this time. Maybe they will add some in the future, we will see. I personally hope they add an Ice Hockey bonus as they have for Football and Basketball.

The odds that DraftKings provide both for in-play and pre-game events are surprisingly robust. They can be higher like the odds of other sports like football, but the numbers rule the world. This means that as long as Football is America’s favorite sport, the NHL and other sports leagues that aren’t as popular won’t have exclusive bonuses or perfect odds (not that you can have excellent odds when betting with a traditional bookie, unlike a betting exchange).

william hill odds nhlNHL Betting at William Hill

William Hill is one of the most popular bookmakers in the world. You probably heard of them if you have visited the United Kingdom. They have been operating in the United States for a while now, and we are pleased with what we’re seeing. William Hill is also one of the official betting partners of the National Hockey League. When it comes to the NHL, William Hill, have a wide variety of betting options. Let’s start by listing a few of the markets you can bet on the NHL:

  • Moneyline
  • Total Match Goals
  • Puck Line Handicap
  • Double Chance
  • 60 Minutes Betting
  • Draw No Bet
  • Teams to Score
  • Goalscorer Markets
  • Anytime Wincast
  • First Goal Wincast
  • Winning Margin
  • Method of Victory

And these are just some of the markets available for each Ice Hockey game. For any contest at any time, the number of open markets is at least one hundred. These markets are divided into categories:

  • Periods
  • Correct Score
  • Goals
  • Handicaps

You can watch any of the games you bet on for free at William Hill TV. This is a unique feature that allows live-streaming directly to your device (phone, tablet, desktop). Not many bookies offer live-streaming, especially of sports that aren’t one of the most popular in the world, so this option is as they say a “gold mine.”

Promotions are a crucial part of a bookie’s image. William Hill doesn’t disappoint in that department. Their welcome bonus for US customers is fresh and accessible among new customers. If you sign-up with a unique promo code and bet $50, you get $50 in free cash. Most of their other bonuses are Football-related, but there is one that interests us – The Puck Parlay Protection. The specifics of this bonus are if you bet a 3-leg Hockey parlay, you will automatically get a 15% Cashback. If your qualifying bet loses, then you will receive a 20% Cashback of up to $50. We expect them to release other promotions related to Hockey, but for now, this is all we get.

NHL Bet Types

If you are a new punter, then the next section is exactly for you. Despite what you might think, there are many things you can bet on, not just who the winner would be. Read below for more info on NHL betting.

Straight-up winner

This kind of bet is the everyday bet anyone would think of. It is also called a Moneyline bet. You are required to pick out the outright winner of a game/match. The odds are represented with a (+) and a (-) sign. For example, you can see it presented like this: Boston Bruins –130, Toronto Maple Leafs +110. The favorites in this made-up game are the Bruins, and the underdogs are the Leafs. The signs before the odds are traditionally flipped, its common across all sportsbooks in the world.

Combined Score Bets

Totals are also known as Over/Under bets. With these kinds of bets, a pre-determined line is picked from the oddsmaker, and you would have to choose whether the total number of goals scored, assists, etc., are Over or Under this fictional line. If the score is the exact number as the “line,” then the bet is “pushed.” This means that the bet is reset, and your fund will be returned to you.

The Hockey Point Spread

In this type of bet, the underdog is given an advantage and the favorite a disadvantage. This type of bet is the same as spreads in football or runlines in baseball. The “puckline” is always set at 1.5 because Hockey, in general, is a low-scoring game, and they typical final we can see in Ice Hockey games is 3-2.

One Ticket – Multiple Bets

This is the typical Parlay bet. Multiple markets and bets combined in one bet slip. The one thing you have to keep in mind is that while you can combine Totals, Moneylines, and Pucklines, all of your bets have to win so that you can get your winnings. If only one loses, then the whole bet is considered a loss.

Props and Futures

Props and Futures are prevalent types of bets. Many people prefer them to other types because they are considered to be more “entertaining.”

Let’s start with Futures. They are also sometimes called Long-term bets. A Hockey related example of a Futures market is: Who would win this season’s Stanley Cup? The odds for this market are released even before the Hockey season begins. Something you would need to know though, is that odds for these types of markets change over time. So, if you wish to get a giant payout at the end of the season, you would want to place your wager as early as possible.

Props are bets that don’t necessarily relate to the outcome of the game. They are more like milestones or events you can bet on. They are made before puck drop. For instance, a market you might often see is “Which team will score first?” or “How many shots will a player take in a given period?”. Typically, high-profile games like the Stanley Cup final or the NHL playoffs have more props you can bet on because there are more opportunities for thrilling outcomes such as shootouts or overtime.
